BRSR REPORTING IN INDIA: A BEGGINER'S GUIDE

What Is BRSR and Why Does It Matter?

The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) is the SEBI-mandated disclosure framework that requires the top 1,000 listed companies in India to report on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Introduced in 2021 and effective from FY 2022-23, BRSR replaces the earlier Business Responsibility Report (BRR) and aligns Indian corporate disclosure with global sustainability standards such as the GRI, SASB, and TCFD.

For Indian companies, BRSR is not just a compliance checkbox. It signals to investors, regulators, and customers that your business takes its ESG responsibilities seriously. With stakeholders increasingly scrutinising corporate sustainability performance, a well-prepared BRSR can strengthen investor confidence, improve access to capital, and differentiate your brand in a competitive market.

Who Must File the BRSR?

As of the latest SEBI circular, the BRSR is mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation. However, adoption is rapidly expanding:

  • Top 1,000 listed entities mandatory annual filing with the stock exchanges
  • Voluntary adoption unlisted companies, SMEs, and smaller listed entities are increasingly filing voluntarily to demonstrate ESG commitment
  • Value chain reporting SEBI encourages companies to map and report on their value chain ESG risks, extending the framework's influence to suppliers and partners

If your company is outside the mandatory threshold but supplies goods or services to a BRSR-filing company, you may already be asked to provide ESG data for their value chain disclosure.

The Nine Principles of BRSR

BRSR is structured around nine principles derived from the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC). Each principle covers a distinct aspect of responsible business:

  1. Ethics and transparency — Conduct business ethically and transparently
  2. Product sustainability — Provide goods and services that are safe, sustainable, and accessible
  3. Employee well-being — Promote the well-being of all employees, including safety and inclusion
  4. Stakeholder engagement — Responsibly engage with all stakeholders
  5. Human rights — Respect and promote human rights across operations
  6. Environment — Protect and restore the environment through responsible practices
  7. Public policy advocacy — Engage public policy in a responsible and transparent manner
  8. Community development — Promote inclusive growth and equitable development
  9. Customer value — Deliver value to customers through responsible engagement

Each principle requires quantitative and qualitative disclosures, covering governance structures, policies, processes, and performance data.

Key Components of a BRSR Filing

A complete BRSR submission includes two main sections:

Section A: General Disclosures Company overview, products and services, operations footprint, employee data, and supply chain details.

Section B: Principle-Wise Performance For each of the nine principles, companies must answer essential and leadership indicators. Essential indicators are mandatory, while leadership indicators are voluntary and demonstrate advanced ESG maturity.

The report covers topics including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water withdrawal, waste management, employee training hours, safety incidents, board diversity, stakeholder grievances, and community development spend.

BRSR Reporting Timeline and Deadlines

BRSR is submitted annually as part of the annual report or as a separate filing to stock exchanges. The reporting cycle follows the financial year:

  • April 1 to March 31 — Reporting period (same as the financial year)
  • Within 30 days of annual board approval — Filing deadline with stock exchanges
  • For most companies, this means submission between May and August each year

Planning ahead is critical. Companies should begin data collection at least three to four months before the filing deadline to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your First BRSR

  1. Starting too late Data collection across multiple departments takes time. Begin at least four months before your deadline.
  2. Inconsistent data Use standardised templates and definitions to ensure data is comparable year over year.
  3. Ignoring the value chain BRSR expects companies to report on ESG risks beyond their own operations. Map your supply chain early.
  4. Treating it as a one-time exercise BRSR is an annual commitment. Build systems and processes that make repeat filings smoother and more accurate.
  5. Overlooking leadership indicators While voluntary, leadership indicators signal ESG maturity to investors and can set you apart from peers.

Your Next Steps Towards BRSR Compliance
